I had a friend Albert Lefrienere, who was a welder and developed mesothelioma cancer is asbestos exposure. He lived for about 6 months after his diagnosis. His ex-wife took care of him, he felt like he was burning up. Cool compresses helped, pain meds for the pain, I know he suffered greatly. He was so much pain, that he couldn’t really talk either.
A little side bar story.. he wanted to take me to an event dinner or something like this. Georgette his wife at the time couldn’t go and since I was a friend of both of theirs.. she wasn’t too keen about it. She was a very aware person, wondering why she was being bothered by it.
I don’t know why either. We were all just friends.
Later she shared this story.. to me. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that Albert really liked me. I was really surprised. She out lived him, and we became sisters.More than blood sisters. I do really miss her still.
People without treatment, the average life expectancy is only a few months. Treatment can extend this in certain patients, but mesothelioma is still considered incurable, and long-term remission is very rare. There are 4 stages of Staging Mesothelioma
Cancer staging is an important part of a diagnosis because it determines treatment options. Although there isn’t a specific staging system for mesothelioma, doctors have used a number of systems — TNM, Butchart, and Brigham — to divide the spread of cancer into 4 stages.
As a guide, the earlier the stage, the less mesothelioma has grown or spread. The spread of cancer is called metastasis. The less it has spread, the easier it is for surgeons to remove which greatly improves the prognosis.
- Stage 1: At the earliest stage, there’s no spread to lymph nodes and the cancer is localized to one side of the body. Stage 1 patients have the most treatment options.
- Stage 2: Mesothelioma is still localized to one side of the body but there are signs of metastasis to nearby lymph nodes. Aggressive treatment options are still an option.
- Stage 3: The first significant signs of metastasis have occurred. Mesothelioma has spread to lymph nodes and surrounding organs. Surgical options become limited.
- Stage 4: Mesothelioma has spread to the other side of the body. Treatment options for stage 4 patients primarily involve relieving symptoms and improving quality of life
