7 Stories from People EOL

Have you lost anyone?

7 stories from people EOL, who want to die at home. What other wishes would you like to have? Eventually our bodies just get worn out and God calls us home.

I posted a similar question on Alignable.. there were always a few people who weren’t going to die or that my question was morbid. Experiences of people who ran out of money being in an assisted living place or in a hospital. Experiences where people haven’t thought enough about it to make a plan. It’s a question to think about, do you want to die at home?

After having a near fatal stroke at 50 yrs and spending 15 days in hospital, 4 of them in icu, I definitely want to die at home. I don’t want to spend another hour in a hospital.

While this is a difficult subject, but is one that we all must have with our families, parents especially who are in or near retirement age. Most people I have talked to about this prefer to be at home whether it be for rehab or hospice.

Any long term care event can challenge a family when it comes to paying for services, providing care, or being able to advocate in your family member’s best interest.

My father died at home withe 5 of us family members at his side and the wonderful help of hospice nurses.  It is challenging yet the way previous generations handled it. Did things for my father I never expected to have to do.

My father thanked us every time we had to attend his needs. Right now I am sitting at my brother in laws house helping him make the transition out of this life.  Many emotions in layers.

Hope, prayer and love to all facing this and thinking about the life you are living and the exit you will be making in the future.  Live well and live well.

My family has always been open about our requests for “the end”. I am very thankful that I did not have to make those types of decisions while my father was on a ventilator.

My last moment before they stopped the oxygen was me explaining to him what was about to happen. He looked at me, gave a slight nod, closed his eyes, and the rest is for another story. But, he had planned it, and at 64 years old he had no plans of dying either and lived his life to the fullest.

Things do happen, and I am thankful that my family is able to talk about these things and get them in writing.

Both of my parents passed in 2021 and at home, just as they wanted. We were very thankful for hospice services and support. No one prepares you to care for dying parents, but as their main caregiver I was so thankful that I was able to spend so much time with them during their last weeks.

They died with family at their sides and it was very peaceful. My plan is to die in my own home as well and I have prepared my children for that, as much as one can.

Thank you for starting this thread.  I know that I have seen my family both pass at home (unexpectedly).  One of the lessons our family learned was the need to have the proper paperwork and instructions about their wishes and desires for what would happen during and after.

That is one reason why I am focusing on helping individuals ensure that they have a will and other important paperwork in place to provide peace of mind.

When planning, don’t assume you will have loved ones around you. They might be far away, predecease you, or not be competent themselves to take on managing your passing. Get real. Know the laws in your state. Get paperwork done now! A video of you speaking your wishes is a good add-on, too.

Most of the people who posted what they wanted,  who want  to die at home, some at the golf course, some at their cabin fishing, some trying to get their parents into assisted living and many other places. The question is “Do you want to die at home?” Have the 7 Stories from People helped you make a decision?
